It’s important to teach our children about wildlife and endangered species because empowering them to take action at an early age gives us better hope for the future. Kids are deeply connected to animals. Whenever a child sees someone with a dog at the park, they will go racing over to pet the animal. When a bunny goes hopping by, kids will chase it to try and “play” with the cuddly little animal. At a zoo, kids will ooh and ah over the animals and their eyes will light up.
Through education and activities, kids can learn more about endangered animals and the right steps that humans can take to help save them.
San Diego Zoo Global is a not-for-profit organization that operates the San Diego Zoo, the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, and the Institute for Conservation Research. San Diego Zoo Global is committed to saving species worldwide by uniting their expertise in animal care and conservation science with their dedication to inspiring passion for nature. They are leading the fight against extinction.
The San Diego Zoo Global is trying to raise awareness for their work with rhinos. Did you know that three rhinos are killed every day for their horns? You may wonder what is so special about a rhino horn? It is nothing more than compacted, continuously growing keratin, the same material as our hair and fingernails. No big mystery, no life-saving elixir. It is out of greed and misguided beliefs that are running these species into the ground.
There are many ways we can educate our kids about rhinos and how we can help them. Start by talking to your kids, reading books together, and participating in activities that will make it easier for kids to understand and to allow them to express their emotions.
