My family just got back from our first RV trip with our traveling buddies, Linda from Giggles, Gobbles and Gulps and her family. This is our sixth trip together and we love having another family to travel with. Taking an RV trip was on our travel bucket list, so we were thrilled to partner with Go RVing and KOA Campgrounds to make this a reality.
Niagara Falls Grand Island KOA
We wanted to stay in an area that had places to visit that were close to the campground. Go RVing helped us select a destination and reserve a campground. We decided on Grand Island, NY and stayed at the Niagara Falls Grand Island KOA. This was about an eight hour trip for us. The KOA had a shuttle bus to Niagara Falls so we felt this was a perfect place for our first RV experience.
We drove the Winnebago Minnie Winnie and it was great having a kitchen and bathroom on board so we didn’t have to stop. We were able to feed the family on-the-go. Everyone was able to use the restroom if they needed to, which cut down the amount of times we needed to stop. The boys loved traveling in the RV and thought it was so cool. They watched movies, played games, and snacked the entire trip. With four growing boys, they are always hungry!
Linda and I did all of the meal planning, making sure we had lots of options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The RV had enough cabinet space, a refrigerator, and freezer to hold our stuff. We brought a cooler that held the extra drinks and made it convenient to grab outside when we were on the campsite. We also brought our own sheets, blankets, and pillows to make the RV feel more like home.
I loved our campsite! We had a lot of room so we could spread out and it felt private. Since we had eight people, we also had a cabin to give us more room. The Minnie Winnie could sleep seven, but with adults it would be a bit cramp.
The cabin was the perfect solution and the boys loved being able to run back and forth from the RV to the cabin, which were only a few feet apart. The cabin was fully stocked with linens, a small kitchen, full bathroom with tub and shower, two-bedrooms (bunk beds and queen bed), and a full sleeper sofa. To read more about the cabins, check out Linda’s post, Deluxe Cabin at Kampgrounds of America Niagara Falls Grand Island.
Now I will admit we had a bit of a struggle with the boys when we got there to get them to put down their devices and spend time outside. As long as we had stuff for them to do they were fine. The KOA had a lot of activities for the kids; a pool, banana bikes, playground, basketball court, crafts, bingo, two catch and release fishing ponds, boat rentals, arcade, tetherball, and Fantasy Island Amusement Park was right next door.
The boys particularly liked the banana bikes, so we rented them a few times to allow them to burn some energy.
We also brought activities that we could do at our campsite.
- Wiffle ball
- Board games
- Drawing pads (our older two did a ton of drawing)
We came up with fun little games for the boys to play like dizzy bat races and how many football passes can they catch in a row. It’s all about giving them challenges and activities to keep them busy and entertained. And if you don’t have items on hand, improvise like we did. We only had one bat, so a broom worked as a stand in for the second bat.
One of the best things was teaching the boys life skills like building a fire.
They also did a ton of fishing at the catch and release pond.
We spent five nights at the Niagra Falls Grand Island KOA. We took two days to explore Niagara Falls USA and the Canadian side. Over the next few weeks, I’ll be highlighting what we did to help you plan your trip to Niagara Falls.
This was such a great experience and we are now hooked on RVing! The boys have already asked if we can go on another trip. I think next time we’d switch it up and pick two to three campgrounds to stay at so that we can visit more places.
Thank you Go Rving and the Niagara Falls Grand Island KOA for an awesome trip!
