Part 2: How do You Build Your Son’s Confidence in School?
Without that understanding, you may do exactly the wrong thing when trying to help him. Have you ever had the experience of trying to help your son with his homework and one or both of you ends up frustrated, angry or in tears? What goes wrong in a situation like that? This type of experience drains the confidence of any parent and may cause you to think you really cannot help him.
In the Helping Boys Learn Parent Community, we are fostering a 3 step process that will give you the tools to help your son learn.
1. Understanding how he learns– Many parents do not realize that boy’s learning needs are often different than girl’s when it comes to motivation and confidence in school. The “6 Secrets” that we focus on are designed to give you that understanding.
We have a simple & fun quiz which will show you his learning style.
Take it here for free.
2. Using that understanding to build on his strengths – Once you understand better his learning style, you can use that understanding to do the right things to help him be more successful at school. The secrets of Humor, Challenge and Mastery are particularly helpful with confidence. How strong is your son in these areas? The Boys Learning Quiz will tell you.
3. Helping him move towards independent learning – When you have a good understanding of his learning style and have successfully started to build on his strengths to have him experience success, then you are ready to help him use those strengths independent of you.
This will be crucial to his confidence and success in the long term. If you have a young boy at home now, you may think this is a long way off—something that he does in high school or college. But in reality, if you don’t start to help him now he will struggle when he gets to those higher levels of education. Believe it or not, between 4-10 years of age is the decisive time to breed this confidence in his ability to learn independently.
