You know why I’m excited it’s Friday? Yes, it’s the weekend which is nice (I mean who doesn’t love the weekend, right?) but I’m more excited because I get to spotlight a new boy mom!
Today meet Lindsey from Sisters to Sons! She comes from a family of 5 girls (yes 5!) and now here she is raising all boys! You must check out her blog. She has a fun and witty personality that keeps you laughing and nodding your head. I love her post “How to feel like a girl in a house full of boys!” – if you have all boys you know it’s hard to find some girl time.
Now let’s meet Lindsey and her boys!
Big Guy – 4/09, Middle Guy – 4/11, and Little Guy – 4/13
Describe your sons.
I have 3 sons and although they are ALL April babies they are all completely different. Big guy is outgoing, loud, and loves the spotlight. Little squirt is quiet, reserved, and only lets those closest to him to see his wild side. And the Chunk, he has a little devilishness in his eyes.
How do you stay calm when surrounded by ALL that energy?
I sigh a lot and say “Oh man!”… that sort of helps. Also, going for running and drinking wine… but not at the same time!
How do you instill gentlemanly behavior, actions, thoughts?
I think the best way to teach good behavior is to model it yourself. If my kids are back talking to me, it doesn’t take me long to realize that they sound just like I do when I yell at them. I try to establish a mutual respect – Yes. It is okay to apologize to your kids when you have done something wrong. You’d be surprised at the impact that makes and the message it sends.
What do you like to do with your sons?
I’ll start with what I do NOT like… I do not like doing art projects, cooking with them, dressing them, or trying to get them to brush their teeth. I DO love playing outside with them and taking them places where they can run wild and see new things. I love watching my boys play together and being the outside observer. I love taking them on walks through the neighborhood and watching them ride bikes. These are the moments when they are the happiest…the simple things!
Where is your favorite place to shop for them?
I love Crew Cuts, Gap Kids, and Target! However, I am pretty sure my boys pick the same outfit out every day. They will NOT wear jeans or “work shirts”. If it is soft and has an elastic waist band, they are happy.
What are some books/series your sons like to read?
I am pretty sure I know every Curious George by heart.
How do you handle violence in play? Some of this is normal “boy” behavior, but when do you feel it crosses the line? How do you guide them?
I must admit I am not 100% comfortable with violent play even though I’ve read that it is completely normal. In fact, it helps boys play out their emotions. The best article I read said to think about it as “super hero” play, rather than “violent play”. But still, I don’t buy any weapon toys…. although you’d be surprised at how they can use their imagination! Paper towel roll = sword, Markers linked together = gun etc..
If you have a fighter, how do you handle?
For the most part, I let my kids duke out their own fights since it is usually harmless wrestling. It is exhausting trying to mediate all day! When my kids get older I might change my stance on that!
Right now its the legos….They are EVERYWHERE!
I love being a boy mom because ______
no matter what, I was their first love and that’s good enough for me!
