Every Sunday, my Grandparents would take their boat out into the ocean with friends to go fishing. They absolutely loved it, and it was something they had done for many years.
One week when they were out on the boat, my Grandpop caught a big fish. He was fighting a pretty hard battle, until he leaned over the boat and out popped his false teeth right into the water!
A few months later at Christmas, my Grandmom gave my Grandpop a box with a little note attached. He read the note, and while not quite sure what it meant, he decided to open the present anyway. He immediately broke out into laughter and pulled out a chattering teeth toy.
That was the start of a family tradition.
A few years later, my Aunt attempted to make her very first three-layered cake for a family gathering. When she served the dessert, everyone watched as the top half slid off and landed on the floor. So of course she received baking lessons that year for Christmas!
Over the years, my mom has continued the tradition that my Grandparents started. So many little and funny things happen that it’s hard to keep track of all of them, so she began keeping what we call a “family fun journal”.
During the year, she writes down humorous things that happen to each of us. Then, at the end of the year, my mom will buy small gifts for everyone and attach a little note. We must (because she makes us) read the note out loud for everyone to hear before opening the present. Let’s just say we do a ton of laughing on Christmas!
The really cool part is that we can look back in the journal of everything that has happened to our family throughout the years. This little tradition helps you value the small moments in life. I know that, one day, it will be my turn to carry on this fun family tradition.
Do you have any family traditions that have been passed down?
