It’s so easy in today’s society for kids to become couch potatoes.
I know if it were up to my boys, they’d sit and play video games and watch movies all day.
That’s why I have to limit them. I’m not saying I don’t let them watch tv or play games because I do.
But I think there is a healthy balance.
I make sure my kids get outside almost everyday.
But what’s more important is showing my boys that we can all be active together.
I want them to grow up loving the outdoors and enjoy breaking a sweat!
Plus, it helps my husband and I stay healthy and fit while having some family bonding time.
There are a few activities we do as a family:
1. Go for bike rides:
Now that my oldest learned how to ride a bike (YAY!), we try to go on bike rides a few times a month. My husband attaches a trailer on the back of his bike for my youngest and my older son rides along side of us on his own bike. It’s just a fun and relaxing activity that my kids love to do.
2. Play tennis
For a few weeks my boys have been asking me to buy them tennis rackets. I’m not sure where they got the idea but I finally picked up rackets for the entire family.
We go to the tennis courts a few times a week. My six-year-old is trying to learn how to play the game while my three-year-old is content on throwing the ball up in the air and hitting it. My husband and I will actually get to play by ourselves for a bit and let me tell you it’s a great way to burn some calories – who knew?!
3. Take a walk
I love taking walks with the boys. It’s great to get outdoors and explore, especially in the Fall. We will often talk about the things we see around us and visit the horses that are up the street.
4. Have fun at the park
The park is a great way to get some exercise. Instead of sitting on the park bench, I will play tag with them or chase them down the slide. We also bring big bouncy balls to the park and play kick ball.
5. Dance, Dance, Dance!
We love cranking up the tunes and dancing around the kitchen. I can’t dance but my boys think I’m a rock star. We will even do a dance train and move around the house. Not only does it get us moving, but it’s actually a ton of fun. I love letting loose and shaking my thang!
How do you keep your family active?

I have been talking about playing tennis with my hubs for a few weeks now. So funny that you mentioned it. I think it’s a sign that we all need racquets for Christmas!

The tennis picture reminds me of when I was little. We always played with my parents. I agree, staying outside is a great thing. I was always outside as a kiddo!
With a toddler that never stops I am always moving! I bet giving tennis a try with him would be fun!

Great tips. My daughter used to love dancing with me, but now that she’s 13 it’s not cool anymore. Oh well.

When kiddos come to the ranch they have to be outside with me! We hike, play, feed animals, go on scavenger hunts, hunt for old bones, ride around the ranch, have picnics and just play. The only time they watch TV is before bed. When it is too cold to go outside we play lots of board games which is no exercise, but better than watching TV too much!

This summer I gave triathlons a shot (I completed three sprints and loved it!) and my boys started inventing their own versions of triathlons. I also coach soccer for my oldest’s team and we usually head out to the backyard or neighborhood park for a little family game a few times a week. On rainy days, I have allowed the boys to create indoor obstacle courses…shudder…not my favorite!
