Last weekend, we celebrated my son’s 6th birthday. He wanted an Angry Birds themed party, so I took on the challenge.
I showed you his Angry Birds party invitations, which I think came out super cute.
I decided instead of buying a cake, I would attempt to make Angry Birds cupcakes for the kids. Now, I’m not a baker. I’ve messed up many cakes in my day, but I have to say I’m quite proud of how the cupcakes turned out.
I enlisted my mom and boys to help out and we made about 24 cupcakes.
It’s very easy to make, just takes a bit of time.
What you need:
- Sugars in red, blue and yellow. If you can find red jimmies {that’s what we call it on the East Coast}, that would work perfectly for the red Angry Bird.
- Orange sugar slices for the beaks cut in thirds.
- Mini chocolate chips for the pupils and pig nose.
- Mini marshmallows for the eyeballs and pig teeth.
- Large marshmallows for the bellies of the red and blue birds and for the pig snout.
- Black licorice for the eyebrows. You will need to cut them thin to create the “angry” effect.
- Food color in red, blue, yellow and green. I used gel food coloring for give me a deeper color.
- Tub of frosting {I used two tubs for two boxes of cupcakes}.
Box of your favorite cupcake mix or you can make from scratch.
Directions:
- Cut orange sugar slices in thirds.
- Cut black licorice into thin pieces.
- Mix frosting with gel food coloring {red, blue, yellow and green} to give it a deeper color.
- Frost cupcake in base color.
- Dip cupcake in sprinkles {it’s a lot easier and less messy} until the cupcake is fully covered.
- Cut a small marshmallow in half and stick them in the frosting as eyes. TIP: I added a little bit of frosting to the back side of the marshmallow to make it stick better.
- Add mini chocolate chip to center of marshmallow to create eyes.
- Put the black licorice over the eyes to create an “angry” effect.
- Take a large marshmallow, cut into thirds, flatten and add to bottom of cupcake as a belly.
And my favorite one:
- For the pigs’ snout, I used a large marshmallow cut in half and covered it with frosting.
- I cut a small marshmallow in thirds and used for the teeth.
- Add two mini chocolate chips for the nose and one for each eye.
That’s it! Super easy and the kids went CRAZY over them, not to mention the parents were pretty impressed.
