Summer is almost over and I am jumping up and down {did I just say that out loud}?
It’s been a long and crazy summer filled with camp, day trips, blogging events, play dates, BBQs, and good old fashion backyard fun.
My boys never sit still and we often have to find creative ways to keep them entertained.
Living on 3+ acres with no close neighbors means mom is their babysitter, play toy and jungle gym.
I’ve found a few ways to keep my boys entertained in our own back yard. It’s fun, different and most importantly affordable.
8 Ways To Have Fun In Your Own Backyard
Campout
If you read my blog, you know we host a huge camp out every year. This a great way to do something very inexpensive, adventurous and build memories for your kids.
And if you don’t want to host a camp out, go simple. Surprise your family with a night out in the back yard!
Footprint Paintings;
Lay out a big blanket or roll of art paper and let the kids go crazy making footprints.
Cloud Shapes;
When the boys and I are in the pool or playing on the swings we will often play, “What shapes/items can you see in the clouds?” It’s a great way for them to use their imagination!
Backyard Games;
Come up with your own backyard games – the one who wins the most games is the winner – or you can have a tie breaker like I do so no one has a temper tantrum.
Here are some fun games we have tried:
- Running around the backyard with check points {you need to touch that tree, pick up a ball, go through the sprinkler, etc.}
- High jump and low jump out of flower pot and sticks
- Rolling or handstand competition
- Hopping and/or skipping race
Balloon Fight
Balloons filled with water make great water bombs!
Silly String Fun
Yes it’s messy, yes it gets everywhere and yes you often have to clean it up {unless you are lucky enough to do it right before it rains}. The kids have fun for hours and even Dads love playing too!
Scavenge Hunt
Create a list of items your kids need to find in the back yard!
Flower Fun
Collect flowers and create one of the following:
- Make tiny flower vases for your doll’s house {of course we don’t have this but fun for any little girl}
- Press them in a book & used the pressed flowers to make cards
- Hang them upside down to dry – tie with string
- Soak rose petals in water and sugar then drain to make rose perfume

Love the idea of using the flowers for minivases for dollhouses! My little girl will love that idea! Thanks for sharing.
Another we do is build obsticle (spelling!?) courses in the yard. We take turns letting the kids design them and they love it. My husband is a P.E. teacher so we have all sorts of fun things like parachutes and hula hoops in the yard for them.
Oh that sounds like so much fun! I bet the kids love it!
The silly string looks like such fun! I love it when JDaniel given me flowers.

We love the camp-out too, but we’ve never had the neighbors come over (our kids are still pretty little) — what fun!
We also love to Build a Fort.
Great post, Tina!
Oh you should – it’s so much fun! This was the first year that we all slept outside together & the little one made it the whole night!

Thanks for sharing some fun ideas for summer fun. I will have to make a mental note of a few, because my kids love outdoor adventure. The scavenger hunt and footprint paint sound fun! My kids love hide and seek, so finding hidden items is way more fun.

I love all the ideas you have here… especially the backyard campout one. That is such a memorable way to spend the night with the family. Great post!
My boys kept saying they were bored. We built a swingset, got them a trampoline, sandbox, and this roller coaster thing for the back year. That helped. I needed them to be able to do somethings w/o me!

Wow you live on 3+ acres? I’m SO jealous! We live in a townhouse in the city, and we’re anxiously awaiting for it to sell so we can move ASAP. Maybe when I move, I can write a post about things to do in our backyard. *sigh* ….someday.

We always play baseball in our backyard…with an added twist. We put the baby in the swing and to make sure he is a part of the fun, whoever gets a hit and runs the bases has to go by and push the baby in the swing. The laughing from that is so intoxicating!

I love the picture of your hubby covered in silly string. So much fun. My girls love silly string too, and it’s so cheap if you can pick it up at the dollar store. You’ve got to love cheap and easy fun!
