In The Hot Seat

by Life Without Pink on April 27, 2011

The other day I was getting dressed when my five-year-old walked into the room.

Big A: “Mom how did you and Daddy make me?”

I literally spit out my coffee. OMG did he just asked me what I think he did?

I didn’t know how to react. I thought I had years to talk about this.

This is my husband’s department, I am so bad under pressure. But I collected my thoughts and tried to remain calm.

Me: “Well Mommy and Daddy met and fell in love with each other. Then we decided to get married because we wanted to stay together forever. After awhile we decided we wanted to start a family and that’s when we had you and your brother.”

Phew I dodged the question and gave him a round about answer.

Big A: “What does married mean?”

Me: “It means when you love someone very much and want to stay with them forever. I knew I wanted to be with your Daddy so we got married and moved into a house together.”

Big A: “Oh. So when I get married do I live with the person?”

Me: “Yes you will one day.”

Big A: “But I don’t want to. I want you to live with me too.”

Awe my sweet boy, still putting his Mama first.

Me: “If you want me to live with you and your wife, I will honey.”

Big A: “Ok that’s a deal right?”

Me: “Absolutely! But we will probably have to check with your wife to make sure she is ok with it.”

Big A: “Ok, but I think she will be.”

Me: “Promise me something?”

Big A: “What Mom?”

Me: “That you will never be afraid to give me kisses and hugs especially when you are as big as your Daddy.”

Big A: “I won’t. You are my best girl ever!”

Now that’s how you avoid an almost terrifying conversation. I am hoping I have a few more years before he asks me that question again. I guess I should start practicing now to get my story straight.

Have your kids put you on the spot yet?

My daughter asked me how the baby was going to come out of Aunt Brooke’s (my pregnant sister) belly. I had no idea what to say, so I just said “the doctor will take it out”.

You gave a great answer! And I love how your son is already calling the shots in his future marriage ;)

So sweet! H asks me all the time about how babies get out of bellies. I just tell him the doctor knows how to do it, and that’s why mommies go to the hospital to have the baby. He knows I’m holding out on him, though, so he keeps badgering me.

H also wants to live with us forever, which I find endearing right now. At 18, though, he’s out of here. ;-)

Way to dodge the bullet on that question and turn it in to something so sweet. You will have to remind him of this post when he is older.

We get a lot of questions about death, because our two dogs died. It is really hard and uncomfortable to answer those questions at their level.

My kids are almost 11, 10, and 8, so yes! Many times! At first I did a lot of the answering minimally and avoiding as much as possible but I’m getting better. I know the more open and honest you are, the better but in an age appropriate manner.

Exactly. I try to tell my son in 5yr old terms. I believe in being honest as well but this one threw me for a loop that he was even thinking about this!

oh as the mom of just boys, this post just warmed my heart. I worry so much about them not being close to me. But reading this, I realize it might be up to me, to make sure they don’t want to leave me. :)

No hot seat questions like this yet….more like “who is God’s Daddy?” got anything for me on that one??? ;)

Oh I got that one too and stumbled again! These kids and their questions, super smart! I fear all the time that they will go away to college, meet a girl, fall in love and never come back. That’s why I told my hubby they have to go to college not too far from home :)

We got the What is sex question last week. I’m going to write up a post on it in the next day or so. I was lucky, my hubby was there too. So we both sort of answered the question–enough for a seven year old any way.

My daughter says she will never marry and live with me forever. My son has agreed to get married so I can have grandbabies! Yea!

My daughter has already asked the question and FORCED me to answer. She just kept digging and digging . . . yea, but how does that happen. My vague answers were no longer sufficient. Luckily I had a handy book in the back of my closet. We read it together and now she doesn’t want to talk about any of it at all. ; )

Haven’t had that question… but I did get “Mommy was I in your belly”" Why yes bug you were… as she looks down my shirt she says “where is the door?” OMG What bug? “What door did I come out mommy? I don’t see a door, How could I get out without a door!” I showed her my belly button and she seemed to be fine with that answer! LOL kids are a trip!!
